Lewis Bernaldo de Quirós
Lewis Bernaldo de Quirós trained full-time under the direction of Morihiro Saito Sensei (9th Dan) from 1986 to 1993 at the Iwama Dojo in Japan.
Before beginning his training in Aikido, he trained for 10 years in both Judo and Karate (Shotokan Karate under the direction of Keinosuke Enoeda Sensei, 9th Dan, in London).
During his stay in Japan he also practiced Kyudo (traditional Japanese archery) and Zen.
Since his return from Japan he has dedicated himself entirely to teaching Aikido and to date has given more than 300 international seminars. After his return he maintained regular contact with his teacher, through seminars participating both as an assistant and as a translator, until the death of Morihiro Saito Sensei in 2002.
Lewis received the 5th Dan Aikikai degree from Morihiro Saito Sensei in 1999, 6th Dan Aikikai degree from Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba (Hombu Dojo in Tokyo) in 2009 and 7th Dan in 2024.
He is an instructor and examiner, recognized by Hombu Dojo, of the European network of dojos “Traditional Aikido Europe”, committed to the development, research and dissemination of the Aikido style known as Aikido Takemusu (Aikido Iwama), which was taught directly to Morihiro Saito Sensei during his more than 23 years as a direct student at the founder’s dojo in Iwama, Japan.
Howard Hoa Newens
Chief Instructor at Aikido Institute Davis. Has trained and taught Aikido since 1967 and is ranked black belt 7th degree by Aikido World Headquarters since 2012. He was appointed Shihan (master instructor) in January 2020 by the Doshu. Through the years, he studied with Sensei Dang Thong Phong (7th dan), the late Seiichi Sugano (8th dan), and the late Morihiro Saito (9th dan).
Newens Sensei is the former head of Aikido Institute Oakland. In addition to directing Aikido Institute Davis, he currently serves as the Chief Instructor of the Takemusu Aikido Association, a non-profit association of worldwide schools dedicated to promoting Aikido.
He has also trained in, and teaches, Wu Tai Chi and Chi Kung since 1987. Newens Sensei has published two series of Aikido DVDs entitled Aikido Curriculum and Aikido Essence, as well Taichi DVDs, and three books on Aikido that reflect his five plus decades of experience.
